A tsunami warning is in place for the Pacific Island region, with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre advising that it could cause widespread damage.
The tsunami, triggered by the magnitude 8.8 earthquake that hit Chile on Friday evening, is expected to hit islands in the Pacific from around 7am NZ time.
A bulletin put out by the centre at 4:45am NZ time estimates the effects of the tsunami could be felt at the following times:
Kiribati - 7:36am
Cook Islands - Rarotonga - 7:42am
Tonga - Nukualofa - 8:40am
Samoa - Apia 9:06am
Fiji - 10:04am
Vanuatu - 10:37am
New Caledonia - Noumea 11:18am
It is expected to arrive in Sydney at 10:05 am
